The Abruzzo Region in many places represents to untamed wild of the Italian peninsula. It's location separates the north and the south; thus, has lent itself as the perfect battleground for warring outsiders - whether the Greeks and the Romans in ancient times or the French and the Spanish in medieval times or the Nazis and the Allies in modern times.
Primarily known for its sheep herding, the Abruzzo geography features (often) snow-capped mountains (including the three highest peaks in the Apennines) to the west and a fertile transition from hills to coastline that leads to a sparkling azure sea (actually, two seas: the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian. The Abruzzo crest captures this in a series of diagonal bands cascade from white to green to blue.
